(Not-so) Little Caesars upsized headquarters under construction;

September 8, 2016

Little Caesars this week broke ground on what will be its $150 million world headquarters in downtown Detroit. This is the first new headquarters construction in Detroit in more than 10 years, according to a news release about the building, which will double the size of the chain's current headquarters. The move reflects the company’s plans to rapidly grow in coming years, which will mean bringing on new employees

The 234,000-square-foot building is expected to make a statement in the Detroit skyline. Design features include:

  • a formed-glass facade in the shape of 14-foot-tall pizza slices;
  • an open-air, glass-covered terrace pizza garden filled with herbs and vegetables;
  • a two-story lobby and welcome center;
  • employee screening, training and fitness areas;
  • an innovation kitchen; and
  • retail areas and dining space.

"Today's groundbreaking represents the next chapter of global growth for an iconic Detroit brand, founded by my parents, Mike and Marian Ilitch, in 1959 with a single store," said Ilitch Holdings President and CEO Christopher Ilitch, in a news release. "My hope is that our growth, commitment and continued investment in our community and its people will serve as a catalyst for others to call Detroit and Michigan their home."

Little Caesars is partnering with Olympia Development of Michigan on the construction, which is part of the Ilitch organization’s overall development of dozens of underused areas of the recently bankrupt city. The District of Detroit, where the new headquarters is under construction, will be anchored by Little Caesars Arena, the new home of the Detroit Red Wings.

The Ilitches' investment in downtown eventually will comprise approximately $2 billion in brick-and-mortar projects, the release said.
