Ohio officers reward seatbelt users with Pizza Hut coupons

May 6, 2003

MARION, Ohio -- Marion Catholic High School students wondered recently why Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Geoff Freeman stopped their cars as they pulled into the school's parking lot on the morning of May 2.

According to the Marion Star, they only had cause to celebrate if they were wearing seat belts, as the trooper handed out coupons for a free Pizza Hut pie to those buckled up.

"We just thought it would be fun," said Sharon Cole, marketing director for Pizza Hut. "It's just a simple thing -- buckle up your seat belt."

The state's highway patrol is stepping up its student talks, centered on the dangers of drinking and driving, during the prom season.
