Pizza competition featured in Winkerbean comic strip

MEDINA, Ohio — The storyline in the current Funky Winkerbean comic strip, written and drawn by Tom Batiuk, features a character's adventures as a competitor in a national pizza competition.

 

According to a news release, Batiuk based the series on interviews with Sean Brauser, owner of five-unit Romeo's Pizza, about his 2005 experience in the Food Network Challenge, a pizza and acrobatics competition in Cleveland. Brauser also is a member of the World Pizza Champions team.

 

Batiuk, who lives in Toledo, Ohio, authored a similar pizza-centered series in 2000.

 

In the current series, Mr. Montoni, a long-time Winkerbean character who owns Montoni's Pizzeria, is competing in the Challenge and will be joined by an illustrated Brauser.
