Pizza Hut BOOK IT! enrollment nears 21 million

LOS ANGELES -- Enrollment in the 2001-02 Pizza Hut BOOK IT! National Reading Incentive Program has increased 24 percent in Southern California. The number of schools participating in the program has risen by 414, to 2,119.

The Los Angeles Times'Reading by 9 Program and Pizza Hut joined forces in March to encourage Southern California children to read through the BOOK IT! program.

"BOOK IT! instills a lifelong love of reading that opens the door to achievement and success," said Lani Lattin Duke, director of Reading by 9.

Teachers at participating schools set monthly reading goals for students based on a number of pages, chapters, minutes or whole books read. When a child meets a goal, the teacher gives the student a certificate for a free Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizza.

Nationally, BOOK IT! enrollment has grown to almost 21 million students in 50,000 schools.
