Pizza Hut is ushering in a curvier look beginning today for a limited time with the use of round take-out and delivery boxes on its test of a plant-based pizza topping at its Phoenix East Thomas Road location, where it's using a MorningStar Farms product called where Incogmeato atop the brand's new Garden Specialty pies. The plant-derived Italian sausage-like topping is the pizza brand's second joint venture with Kellogg, parent company of MorningStar Farms, following last month's introduction of the Stuffed Cheez-it Pizza, a news release said.
Aside from Incogmeato, the Garden Specialty Pizza includes onions, mushrooms and banana peppers on a large, hand-tossed crust. And in this pie's case, it's all wrapped up in the less wasteful round pizza boxes
"We innovate for human's sake and we'll win on taste--period," Pizza Hut Chief Brand Officer Marianne Radley said in the release. "At Pizza Hut we don't do anything halfway and improving the customer experience and delivering a better tasting pizza is our core mission. When we talk about feeding more possibilities we mean it — and I can't wait to share these two new industry-changing innovations with our customers."
Pizza Hut partnered with Zume to design the round container, which contains less overall packaging than traditional boxes. Similarly, the container is industrially compostable, in those places where that service is offered, and interlocks for smooth delivery, the brand said, adding that it will seek ways to use the box more widely "in the near future."
"This revolutionary round box--the result of a two-year journey — is the most innovative packaging we've rolled out to date," Pizza Hut Chief Customer and Operations Officer Nicolas Burquier, said in the release. "The round box was engineered to make our products taste even better —by delivering hotter, crispier pizzas. This box is a win, win — it will improve the pizza-eating experience for our customers and simplify the operating experience for our team members."
Kellogg said that the sausage-like "Incogmeato" is a new product that aims to capture the flexitarian market.
The new pie and box is available to customers at the store beginning today at 11 a.m. MT for $10 each, in-store only, with all sale proceeds for the day going to area sustainability organization, Arizona Forward.
