Pizzeria owner hurt in robbery attempt

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A frequent patron of Papino's Pizza & Subs ordered more than just a pepperoni pizza on April 7. He wanted the contents of the cash register, too.

According to the South Bend Tribune, owner Joseph Nary, 64, refused and confronted the belligerent patron, identified as 41-year-old Tim McFarlane.

"I couldn't get around the counter quick enough," Nary said, recalling his anger during the incident, which occurred at 9:30 p.m.

McFarlane then allegedly pushed Nary through the pizzeria's plate glass window and fled in his car.

Nary was taken to Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for deep cuts to his arm and head.

South Bend police later located the alleged getaway car parked at McFarlane's house, where they arrested him.

They then brought him to the hospital, where Nary identified McFarlane as his attacker.

McFarlane was charged with battery and placed in the St. Joseph County Jail on a $6,000 bond. If convicted, he could receive up to eight years in prison.

Nary returned to work Tuesday at his pizzeria, where the window was boarded up.

His mood was subdued.

"I have a headache," he said.
