Punxsy Pizza is hosting the Punxsy Pizza and Prevention benefit again this year for the Punxsutawney Fire Department's three companies, Central, Elk Run and Lindsey, the company announced.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday October 11, 2014, at the 115 North Findley St. location in Punxsutawney. Free Smoke detectors and batteries will be given away by Nationwide Insurance's Kengerskey agency.
"We are excited to support Punxsy Pizza for a great year of raising funds for our local firemen and thank them for their service," Kengersky said. "We encourage all of our customers, friends and neighbors to keep functional smoke alarms in their homes and support the local fire departments whenever they can."
The event will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to the fire department.
"We will be selling our signature pizza, which is The Chief, for $9.11," owner Scott Anthony said.
"You can also come to Punxsy Pizza and pick your pizza up, and coupon cards will be available for use at a later date," Anthony said. "I've been running a survey on Facebook, in which most people, about two-to-one, said they are going for the coupon cards. That's generally how it has played out over the last 13 years.
"It is through community support of a business that keeps this going," Anthony said. "It’s not about me or the business; it's about being a catalyst for the community to come together and make this donation to the fire company."
Anthony mentioned several fires that occurred this past year in the city, including one next door to his house.
"Our house, or even our yard, didn’t suffer any damage or smoke damage, because when firefighters arrived on scene, they were able to bring it under control fairly quickly," Anthony said. "I really enjoy being involved with Pizza and Prevention. It is a nice way to connect with the community."
"We use the funds to supplement our regular funding," Elk Run Assistant Chief Bryan Smith said. "The funding is used for subsidizing training and purchasing equipment and apparatus (trucks)."
