Sbarro betting on closures for turnaround effort

February 20, 2014

After a tumultuous few years that included bankruptcy and a dwindling mall crowd, Sbarro has decided to close 155 of its North American locations.

According to Bloomberg, the closures are an effort to "improve the company's profitability."

Only underperforming company-owned stores will be affected by the decision. Most of Sbarro's restaurants are located in shopping malls, which were hit especially hard during the Recession.

The company continues to focus on overseas expansion, opening 81 international locations in 2013.
