Sbarro to offer Galaxy soy-based cheese

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Galaxy Nutritional Foods, announced that 800-unit Sbarro has approved systemwide use of its low-fat, soy-based Veggie Mozzarella.

Throughout the second half of this year, Galaxy ran extended market tests of its Veggie Mozzarella in several Pizza Hut stores in Terre Haute, Ind. According to the non-dairy cheese maker, sales of pizzas using the product have reached 11 percent in some of those stores.

In the past, Sbarro, headquartered in Melville, N.Y., used Galaxy's non-plant-based, lower-fat mozzarella as a pizza and sandwich topping. It now will use the soy-based cheese exclusively as its low-fat offering.

Galaxy (Amex: Gxy) stock closed at $5.40 a share on Tuesday. That compares to a 52-week range of $3.13 to $6.98.
