Seven pizzerias charged with delivering smokes to minors

March 16, 2003

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Seven independent Edmonton pizza shops and several of their delivery drivers are charged with selling cigarettes to minors.

According to the Edmonton Journal, this marks the second time police and Health Canada have used a sting to bust restaurants selling cigarettes to kids. Four other restaurants and their delivery drivers were charged with similar offenses last November.

The latest sting took place on Jan. 31, when two teenagers working for Health Canada -- a 16-year-old female and a 15-year-old male -- ordered food and cigarettes for delivery to a downtown apartment. Once the teens received their order, city police questioned the drivers.

Under Canada's Tobacco Act, it is illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone under 18.

Those shops charged include: Hot Pizza Donair & Submarine; Splatters Pizza; Columbus Pizza & Donair; Arizona Steak & Pizza; Chicago Steak & Pizza; Mama Pizza & Steakhouse; and New York Steak & Pizza.

Splatter's Pizza, Mama Pizza & Steakhouse and Chicago Steak & Pizza were also charged with not having a tobacco license.
