Papa John's International Inc. board member and sports icon Shaquille O'Neal has closed on a deal for nine Atlanta-based Papa John's restaurants, including one that was just remodeled with a design O'Neal selected that includes his signature on the front of the building and his size 22 footprints at the front door, a news release said.
That store, at 990 State St. Northwest — on the Georgia Tech University Campus near the TNT Studios where O'Neal films during the NBA season — underwent a remodeling effort in celebration of the agreement.
"I am thrilled to be taking my investment in Papa John's to the next level," O'Neal said in the news release. "My investment shows my commitment to the company and was a natural fit. I've been a fan of Papa John's pizza since my days playing basketball at LSU. I could not be prouder of what we have in store for Atlanta as we strive to deliver the city a great pizza experience."
Papa John's said diners can also expect things like basketball-inspired pizza art in the store and a custom "444-SHAQ" phone number. The company said the nine-store investment solidifies O'Neal's investment in and attachment to the brand through his new role as a franchisee. O'Neal will also be the brand's official ambassador now that the company's founder, John Schnatter, stepped out of the role following his turmoil with and withdrawal from the brand.
"Papa John's franchisees are entrepreneurs who have a shared passion for pizza and the communities they serve. Shaquille is no exception," Papa John's CEO Steve Ritchie, said in the release. "Shaquille's experience in the restaurant industry and his love for our products make him a welcome addition to our team."
