Yum boosts leave time for corporate moms who give birth

February 27, 2017

A major player in the quick-service and pizza industries, Yum Brands,  is expanding its parental leave and other flexible work policies as part of a new initiative to put employees first, according to a news release.

The new leave policy is aimed at birth mothers and provides 18 weeks of time off at full pay, while a shorter six-week period, what the company calls "baby bonding” time, is provided for fathers, partners, adoptive and foster parents of a new child.

Yum Brands Global Media and External Communications Director Alecia Dimar said the new policies affect approximately 2,000 employees, "as well as an additional few hundred above-restaurant leaders (including) ... area and region coaches and operational leaders, who are employed by the company."

Dimar told QSRweb.com the new birth mother policy nearly triples the paid time-off for corporate employees since previously they were covered for six to eight weeks paid time off. Likewise, until now there was no formal policy in place for corporate employees who are fathers, partners, adoptive or foster parents with a new child, she said.

At the restaurant level, Dimar said the company offers restaurant general managers and assistant managers at company-owned stores six to eight weeks of paid time off with a new child.

Yum Brands also recently increased flexible work options for corporate staff, by offering half-day Fridays and a minimum of four weeks paid vacation, with two more bonus weeks added for employees at 10, 20 and 30 years with the company.
