Anyone with a pulse would probably admit that this has been a rough week, between the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and the growing vitriol of the U.S. presidential campaign. But Saturday brings a moment of pure relief, when Pi Day returns in all its irrational, pizza-fied, mathematically mystified 3.14-ness.

Coronavirus. Stock market plunges. Recession. Presidential election. Yes, sometimes it does feel like the world is truly ending.
Then, something like Pi Day pops up out of the murky waters of current headlines and you realize, it will be okay, as long as we have pizza.
That's right, just when we all needed it most, that annual day of tribute to the mathematical constant, 3.14, a.k.a. the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The math experts tell us that pi is both an irrational and transcendental number, which also sounds kind of like the times we're in. But according to mathematicians, those two qualities indicate that the number will continue infinitely, without repeating or following a pattern, which is kind of magical if you think about it.

In fact, people have calculated the number pi out to a trillion digits, if you can believe it. That's something to ponder as you grab a beer and then order in or venture out for one of the Pi Day deals listed below, some of which are already in effect this week, even though 3/14 or Pi Day itself is actually Saturday. And when you're enjoying that slice, also give a salute to that master of math and physics, Albert Einstein, whose birthday is also on 3/14. I know, weird, huh?
