Happy Pizza Day ... particularly you, Texas, Michigan

Pizza Marketplace wishes you a Happy Pizza Day. And just for kicks, we thought we'd share a little list that Welcomemat Services sent our way about which towns' residents redeemed the most free Welcomemat pizza gifts over the last year when Texas and Michigan showed a special fondness for the pies.

It may be just another one of those "Hallmark holidays" that just about all pizza brands obligingly use to pull in some business each February, but the designation of today as Pizza Day actually does give us all a reason to stop and think about how one little, relatively simple culinary concept can inspire a lot of creativity and add something fun to our days and nights.

In that spirit, Pizza Marketplace wishes you all a Happy Pizza Day. And just for kicks, we thought we'd share a little list that Welcomemat Services sent our way, after staff at the marketing service pulled their own data about which towns' residents redeemed the most free Welcomemat pizza gifts that come in those "welcome to the neighborhood" packets new residents get when they move in.

The company then cross-referenced that information from a sample size of U.S. markets where the company operates to get a fun, but admittedly largely unscientific ranking of cities and zip codes that most frequently redeem pizza coupons. Here is the ranking of the Top 10, and all we can say is, "Leave some for the rest of us, Texas and Michigan."

  1. Frisco, Texas (75034)
  2. Franklin, Tennesee (37067)
  3. Marietta, Georgia (30062)
  4. Grand Haven, Michigan (49417)
  5. Norton Shores, Michigan (49441)
  6. Wilmington, North Carolina (28412)
  7. McKinney, Texas (75070)
  8. Downington, Pennsylvania (19335)
  9. New Orleans, Louisiana (70119)
  10. Bloomington, Indiana (47401)

In its news release on the list, Welcomemat quoted study results from Smart Flour Foods that indicated about 35 percent of Americans say they go out for a pie or two at least once a month. The study also found that that most of those pie-eaters are women (63 percent) and that most of them (41 percent) are millennial-aged women. Welcomemat likely hopes those women are plentiful in five new markets where they're bringing their services in the U.S. this year, including New York City, Chicago, Nashville, Philadelphia and Kansas City, Missouri.

Oh, and by the way, it's national bagel day, too. Sadly though the hole-y little boiled-and-baked bread item did not get a list of neighborhood popularity rankings. Although maybe those pizza bagels a lot of us have scarfed down could help raise the bagel's national profile.
