Blimpie's is hoping to slay the competition with an Italian street food that dates back to the time of gladiators in ancient Rome, according to a news release.
Beginning today, Blimpie's is offering two piadina Italian flatbread sandwiches that blend meat, roasted vegetables and other accoutrements on a bread first eaten by the citizens of ancient Rome, instead of the chain's usual subs buns. The meatball and sausage piandina packs those two meats, roasted red pepper,s provolone, Parmesan and marinara sauce into a flatbread combo, while the chicken, cheddar and bacon Ranch combination mixes those ingredients into a totable sandwich. In fact, all of the subs Blimpie's offers can be converted into piadina concoctions during the time of the limited offering.
"Known for their buttery, flaky crust and transportability, piadinas are a delicious Italian flatbread sandwich that our guests are going to love," Blimpie Vice President of Marketing Steve Evans, said in a news release. "Blimpie is always looking at trends across the industry and we have seen an increase in cultural cuisines making their way to menus."
The sandwiches will be available through the end of April, the news release said.
