The longest-running cable TV event in history, Shark Week, is upon us and one pizza restaurateur isn't going to miss out on this now 29-year-old event, originally begun to correct some of the more terrifying misconceptions about our toothy underwater friends.
Anthony's Pizza & Pasta has a promotion for the week that brand leadership clearly hopes will send some customers in the Denver chain's direction.
The 20-restaurant concept has introduced a Great White Pizza, along with a week-long of "watch parties" at its locations to provide all the shark action diners can stomach all week long.
The Great White Pizza — named after the famously ravenous fish — is an 18-inch thin-crust pizza topped with a blend of ricotta, mozzarella, garlic and oregano for a shark-week only price of $10, $8 off the usual price.
Shark-smitten diners can also head to the chain's locations this week to take in Discovery Channel shark shows covering the creatures as well as conservation efforts for these top-of-the-food chain predators.
"I've always been fascinated by great whites, so I thought it would be fun to roll out our first-ever Great White Pizza special, along with nightly watch parties," Anthony's CEO John Le Bel said in a news release.
The chain is also dispatching a shark-impersonating employee around Denver to surface at random locations across the area and dole out free merchandise. The chain will also give away free large free cheese pizzas throughout the week.
