Monical's intros Southwest-style pizza

October 10, 2007

BRADLEY, Ill. — Monical's Pizza restaurants throughout central Illinois andIndiana have introduced a specialty pizza called the Southwest Pizza Ole. The new pizza features spicy shredded beef, salsa marinara sauce, green olives, tomatoes and a roasted vegetable blend of onions, red bell peppers and green bell peppers.

The Southwest Pizza Ole is the result of a culinary competition Monical's hosted earlier this year. The goal of the challenge was to help the restaurant chain identify new flavors with potential to be added to Monical's menus.

In a forum loosely adapted from the popular "Iron Chef" program, vendor chefs from Hormel Foods, JTM and Delco each created a pizza, sandwich, pasta, salad and other healthy options. Judges included Chef Lendent, head of the University of Illinois' food and nutrition program; Anne Dill, WCIA morning news personality; Rachael Atchison, FOX Television on-air personality and promotions director; Sid Shanks, Monical's franchisee; and Steve Maxwell, a Monical's regional trainer.

There are 59 Monical's Pizza restaurants, primarily located throughout central Illinois with limited units in Indiana and Wisconsin.
