Purdue University is removing Papa John's founder John Schnatter's name from its economic research building and has offered to return Schnatter's $8 million gift to the school last April, according to USA Today. That was a month before Schnatter allegedly used a racial slur and other racially charged descriptions on a media training call that became public in early July.
Purdue trustees made the decision to wipe the pizza restaurateur's name from the John H. Schnatter Center for Economic Research late last week, which the board said in a statement, was "necessary to avoid distraction from the center's work, counterproductive division on the campus, and any inference of any deviation from the university's often stated stance on tolerance and racial relations."
It is still not known whether the money's return will be accepted by Schnatter philanthropic foundation, nor how the West Lafayette, Indiana university will make up the cash if returned.
