Commodities: A mixed week

The price for cheese fell, wheat and gasoline increased, natural gas prices were mixed, and pizza stocks were up.

The price for cheese fell, wheat and gasoline increased, natural gas prices were mixed, and pizza stocks were up. Details are below.

Cheese

Average block cheese prices fell during the week on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Prices were $1.48 Monday, $1.47 Tuesday, $1.46 Wednesday and Thursday, and $1.47 Friday. The previous week's prices were $1.74 Monday, $1.49 Tuesday and Wednesday, and $1.92 Thursday. The market was closed Friday, March 25, in observance of Good Friday.  

Wheat

Wheat prices increased 15 cents to $5.29 from the previous week on the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. It was $5.14 the previous week.

Gasoline and diesel fuel

Monday's nationwide average for regular unleaded gasoline increased 2 cents to $2.06 from $2.04 the previous week, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

Prices are up from $1.81 a month ago, and are significantly lower than this time last year, when consumers were paying $2.40 at the pump.

Mid-range remained increased 2 cents from last week to $2.30, while Monday's premium unleaded price was $2.53, increasing 3 cents from last week.

The nationwide average for diesel fuel remained at $2.10. Diesel prices were also $1.99 a month ago, and 72 cents down from a year ago, when prices were $2.82.

Natural gas

Natural gas spot price movements were mixed this report week (Wednesday, March 23, to Wednesday, March 30). The Henry Hub spot price rose slightly during the report week from $1.80 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) to $1.84/MMBtu yesterday.

At the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex), the April 2016 contract expired on Tuesday at $1.903/MMBtu. The May contract moved into the front month position and rose over the report week from $1.868/MMBtu last Wednesday to $1.996/MMBtu yesterday.

Pizza company stocks

Shares in Pizza Hut parent Yum! Brands Inc closed Friday at $82.27, up from last week's $79.35.

Domino's finished last week at $133.47, up from last week's $128.74.

Papa John's closed Friday at $55.53, up from $54.73 the previous week.

Shares in Papa Murphy's closed Friday at $11.53, up from last week's $10.33. Four weeks ago it closed at $11.01.
