Commodities: Another week of fluctuation

The price for cheese decreased; wheat and gasoline increased; natural gas decreased; and pizza stocks were mostly down.

The price for cheese decreased; wheat and gasoline increased; natural gas decreased; and pizza stocks were mostly down. Details are below.

Cheese

Average block cheese dropped 5 cents during the week on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Prices were $1.42 Monday, $1.38 Tuesday, $1.36 Wednesday, and $1.37 Thursday and Friday. The previous week's prices were $1.43 Monday and Tuesday, $1.44 Wednesday, and $1.42 Thursday and Friday.

Wheat

Wheat prices increased by 14 cents to $5.40 from the previous week on the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. It was $5.26 the previous week.

Gasoline and diesel fuel

Monday's nationwide average for regular unleaded gasoline increased 8 cents to $2.22 from $2.14 the previous week, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

Prices are up from $2.06 a month ago and are significantly lower than this time last year when consumers were paying $2.61 at the pump.

Mid-range increased 8 cents from last week to $2.46, while Monday's premium unleaded price was $2.68, increasing 8 cents from last week.

The nationwide average for diesel fuel increased by 6 cents to $2.20. Diesel prices were also $2.10 a month ago, and 62 cents down from a year ago, when prices were $2.82.

Natural gas

Natural gas spot prices outside of the Northeast decreased at most locations this report week (Wednesday, April 20, to Wednesday, April 27). The Henry Hub spot price fell from $2.02/MMBtu last Wednesday to $1.88/MMBtu yesterday.
 
At the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex), the May 2016 contract price also fell over the report week, from $2.069/MMBtu last Wednesday to $1.995/MMBtu yesterday, when the contract month closed. The near-month Nymex price is now for June delivery.

Pizza company stocks

Shares in Pizza Hut parent Yum! Brands Inc closed Friday at $79.56, down from last week's $81.19.

Domino's finished last week at $120.88, down from last week's $132.41.

Papa John's closed Friday at $56.59, down from $58.46 the previous week.

Shares in Papa Murphy's closed Friday at $12.56, up from last week's $12.20. Four weeks ago it closed at $11.53.
