Bertucci's has closed its Springfield, Virginia, restaurant, ending its presence in the Washington area and leaving 11 locations in Massachusetts, Delaware and Pennsylvania, according to a report in TheStreet. Founded in 1981, the pizza and Italian restaurant chain once operated more than 100 locations.
The chain has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection three times since 2018, most recently in April 2025. Its restaurant count fell to 59 by its first filing and 31 by its second in December 2022. Another 15 locations closed before the third filing, which the company attributed to consumers moving away from traditional casual dining.
Bertucci's has also tested a format emphasizing convenience. Its Pronto concept opened in downtown Boston on April 23, 2025, a day before the latest bankruptcy filing. Customers order at the counter or online for takeout, with a menu featuring brick-oven pizza, wings, soups and focaccia sandwiches. The format represents an effort to adapt as the company's traditional restaurant footprint contracts.
