Food safety regulators in the Indian state of Maharashtra suspended the licenses of four Domino's outlets and one Pizza Hut store over severe hygiene and compliance violations, according to a Reuters report.
State inspectors reported insect infestations, a lack of pest control and grease residue in pizza-making machines at the Domino's locations, three of which are in Mumbai. The Pizza Hut store's license was suspended after authorities found multiple products lacking expiry dates.
The closures are part of an intensifying crackdown on food safety across the state led by new food safety chief Tukaram Mundhe, whose department inspected more than 100 outlets on Tuesday alone.
"The administration has a strict stance on the quality of food items," Mundhe said in a note detailing the operation, according to Reuters.
Jubilant FoodWorks, the operator of Domino's in India, declined to comment to Reuters. Representatives for Pizza Hut franchisee Sapphire Foods did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
