PizzaMarketplace launches Top 100 Movers & Shakers

| by Alicia Kelso
PizzaMarketplace launches Top 100 Movers & Shakers has released its inaugural Top 100 Movers & Shakers, a ranking of the top concepts, leaders and trends in the $38 billion pizza segment.

For this report, our 16-person advisory panel ranked the top 70 concepts, considering menu and technology innovations, personnel movements, sales, franchising and growth, marketing initiatives and more. The original list began with more than 250 brands.

We also analyzed the top 25 trends in the segment, from technology to toppings, and recognized the top five people who have made the biggest bets and have yielded the biggest rewards.

This year's brand winner is Domino's Pizza, which is experiencing staggering success from a complete recipe and marketing shift. It has also embraced cutting-edge social media and technology initiatives, deepening its relationship with loyal consumers. The company has taken plenty of risks and they continue to pay off.

This year's Top 100 was determined by a panel that ranked each brand according to a scale of one to six. The rankings were averaged based on total overall scores.

Panelists included Scott Baitinger, Streetza; Michele DiMeo and Gennarro DiMeo, Squisito; Keith Dau, The Brothers Three; Jim Ferrell, Fat Jimmy's Pizza; Courtney Kurdziel, Straw Hat Pizza; Barry Klein, Go Roma; Bob Surman, Homemade Pizza Co.; Don Fox, Firehouse Subs; Max Brigham and Janelle Reents, Monical Pizza Co.; John Hoffman, Pagalo's Pizzeria & Gelato; Marla Topliff, Rosati's Pizza; Travis Wigman, The Pizza Peel; Don Vlcek, Marco's Pizza; Robbie Vitrano, Naked Pizza; Ed Zimmerman, The Food Connector.

The top 10 represents a bell curve of sorts, including the segment's movers -- those that were perhaps down but have displayed resiliency and embraced change in their comebacks; and shakers -- those that lead through innovation and forward-thinking initiatives.

They include:

  1. Domino's Pizza, Ann Arbor, Mich.
  2. Papa John's, Louisville, Ky.
  3. Papa Murphy's, Vancouver, Wash.
  4. Pizza Hut, Louisville, Ky.
  5. Naked Pizza, New Orleans
  6. Little Caesars, Detroit
  7. CiCi's, Coppell, Texas
  8. Streetza, Milwaukee
  9. California Pizza Kitchen, Beverly Hills, Calif.
  10. Independents

This year's Top 100 is sponsored by Leapfrog POS, a cloud-based point-of-sale solution that accepts web, mobile and SMS orders, and includes in-store and call center POS.
